We live in a time where almost anything is possible. Thanks to technological advancements and the creativity of brilliant minds, the market is now filled with innovative products; unique objects made with complex constructions, intricate details, and a wide range of materials.
Garments with intricate designs, luxurious fabrics, and high-end finishes are often seen as the most valuable; and rightfully so, considering the craftsmanship behind them. They might look amazing, but in an era of environmental uncertainty, an key question remains: Can these products truly be recycled?
Today, there are many textile recycling plants across the globe, which typically operate using two main methods:
Down-cycling: where garments are completely broken down into their most basic fibre form and used to produce new, often lower-quality products.
Or material separation: a more complex process, either mechanical or chemical, that isolates specific fibres like polyester or polyamide. However, when these are blended with natural fibres, the process becomes far more difficult, and sometimes even impossible.
So, how can we ensure that our garments will be easy to recycle?
The answer is simple: choose garments made from a single fibre. Using just one material source makes recycling significantly easier, extends a garment's lifespan, makes it easier to care for.
At AUME, sustainability isn’t just about how things are made, but also about how they end. We constantly ask ourselves: What happens when a garment is no longer needed?
To solve this problem, we design with intention and where possible our pieces are made from a single natural fibre. Our designs focus on ensuring that the right high quality fabric is chosen considering a garment’s intended use. Ensuring more time with you while minimising textile waste and reducing our environmental impact.
